Book Review: Nutrition diet myths and life by Dr. Amrita Basu

About The Book

Nutrition, Diet Myths & Life : From the author of the wonderfully informative book “Probiotic and Life” this is another gem of an ebook which can solve very many common nutritional issues that everyone faces. The author in this book has examined nutritional advice and diet choices around the world and in this process found some startling misadventures and myth. The biggest one is “nutrition advice can be passed around by everyone”. According to the author “Nutrition advice needs trained professionals who understand the whole story. If you eat the wrong kind of food, there is bound to be a problem” which is the basic takeaway from this book.

What I liked about this book:

The Nutrition, Diet Myths & Life tells us why
1. Fresh is best.
2. Food labels are important.
3. A balanced diet is the best diet.
Unlike the internet which gives us unfiltered health information this book gives us properly vetted and curated information about diet and nutrition which we can trust. I loved this line by the author “Google research is still not a valid qualification, in the field of health”!

The author has likened the human body to a garden saying “Imagine your body is a garden. You plant the seed you want to sow. Eat the food, whose effect you want.”
She has explained why reading food labels in packaged food is of supreme importance and what all we can learn from them.

She has also given details about how to choose the right type of healthy food and how all food that are marked as healthy are not always that healthy.

Immunity Boosters

This book also gives important tips about flu fighting nutritional tips and food that help to increase immunity. Fruits and vegetables, Green Tea, Almonds, walnuts, fish, ginger, onion, garlic, curcumin (turmeric) are all immunity boosting superfoods.

Soya Surprise

One thing that was surprising to me was how unhealthy soya bean is and how it has always been promoted to be a very healthy and nutritive food!

Salads

I totally agreed with the chapter on salads and satiety as I myself am a huge salad fan. My daily dinner usually comprises of a huge bowl of salad.

Diet and Mental Health

The chapter on diet and depression is also very informative. The food that we eat not only affects us physically but plays a huge role in our mental health too.
Overall this book is a must read for everyone who is flummoxed by the huge quantity of nutritional advice available online. If you want to know the true secrets of nutrition that will help to lead a happy and healthy life this is the book. After all it is an undeniable fact that “Health is Wealth”
