Foodtastic Fables by Varsha Bagadia: Bloghchatter Review Program

Foodtastic Fables is a collection of food stories and memories ranging from the simple achaar(pickle) to the unusual Zunka Bhakar. The author shares her memories and experiences related to foods from A to Z. This is not your typical recipe or cookbook. It is more of a collection of food stories and memories with some tips and pointers that she has shared.

What I liked about this book:

Each story introduces either a common food favourite like maggi, icecream to the uncommon handvo, zunka bhakar together with a sweet glimpse into the author’s life. These snippets of information her special relationship with both her parents as well as her husband and children is very endearing. Our mother is usually our main sounding board when it comes to our kitchen battle which is clear from many of her stories. We human beings are social creatures and we all love to know about the life details and experiences of our friends and acquaintances. This book is like a mini portal into the author’s life through her quaint food stories. Her writing style is easy, lucid and the stories are fun to read.

  • I liked her emotional experience associated with Rasmalai and her emotions really shined through.
  • I learnt that bhakar of Zunka Bhakar is actually a type of millet flatbread/roti that I personally like a lot but did not its name.
  • Udkiche Modak is something that I will have to try as I have never tasted it and it sounds just yummy. Hope Varsha will be friendly with me and treat me to some soon J

Things that could be Better

  • This book is in dire need of some mouth watering photographs. A food book is incomplete without mouth watering high resolution colour photographs that will make the reader turn the pages for more.

About the Author

Varsha Bagadia is your regular harried mother of two who’s also a blogger, editor, freelance content writer, Potterhead and a fitness freak, all rolled into one! In some seemingly other life she was a Mechanical engineer and Finance postgraduate. The career break after her son’s birth made her realise that her true calling wasn’t in dry sheets and numbers but in heartfelt words that allowed her to express herself. Her blog was created as a diary to share snippets of her son’s childhood. However, it soon gave her the coveted identity of a writer. She’s now a passionate food, parenting and lifestyle blogger and loves this deliberate shift of focus. You can check out her take on fiction, food, travel, relationships, etc and reviews on her site A Vibrant Palette at www.avibrantpalette.com. She’s also an enterprising cook and loved weaving stories around her bittersweet experiences in the kitchen, how food influences relationships and how a ‘family that eats together, stays together’. Hope you have as much fun reading them as much as she had jotting them down!
