AHA or Alpha Hydoxy Acids are a group of plant derived acids which are famous for skin benefits. The most common AHA’s used in skincare are glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, citric acid etc.

AHA for Skincare: Which is the best AHA for skin

Amongst all the AHA’s the skincare favorites are glycolic acid and lactic acid. They cause the least irritation to our skin.

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid is a water soluble AHA which has the least molecular size. This makes it the most effective in skincare. Now the question is, what does AHA do for your skin?

The benefits of glycolic acid includes

Mild exfoliation: removes dead skin cells from the top layer of skin
Skin smoothening and improved skin texture
promote collagen production
Helps in better absorption of skincare products
Helps brighten the complexion
You can use AHA mainly if you don’t have very oily skin and are mainly concerned with hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone and fine lines.

Which Skin type is AHA good for?

Glycolic Acid is best suited for skin that is prone to hyperpigmentation, acne and signs of aging. But you should note that glycolic acid makes the skin photo sensitive and use it during night time. And it is super important to use a good sunscreen the next day. Also some people may be extra sensitive to glycolic acid and its important to do a patch test before using it.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid occurs naturally in milk and curds. It is a mild AHA that works wonders for the skin in terms of reduction of hyperpigmentation, mild exfoliation and improving overall texture.
