Must watch OTT series this summer: A guest post

In the last few years, OTT series gradually emerged into the limelight. During the lockdown, this was our saving grace. Web series are now known for their creative content, unique stories and interesting ideas. There are numerous OTTs with original series but here’s the best of the lot, so be sure to check these out this summer.

Schitt’s Creek comedy series

Schitt’s Creek – This one was actually an TV series but that’s the beauty of OTTs – shows we thought were long lost are available! This show about an uber wealthy dysfunctional family who lose their fortune and have to go live in a godforsaken small town, is utterly hilarious! It slowly grows on you until you just can’t do without Moira’s weird accent, Alexis’ “Davayyd!”, David’s outrageous attires and Mr. Rose’s pompous geniality. The ensemble cast make the show so amazing. Available on Netflix.

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – Miriam, a young, affluent Jewish girl, recently abandoned by her husband, discovers her passion and talent for standup comedy. This was the 1950s when this was not an acceptable profession for a respectable woman. Hiding from family and friends, she starts to get gigs and make a name. The rib-breaking funny shows she puts on is what makes this show fabulous. Available on Prime Video.

Good Girls

Good Girls – A gang of middle aged women, perfect models of society, so called “good girls”, take matters into their own hands when they are strapped for money. They do what is required to bring their lives on track. So what if the “matters” aren’t really legally correct, so what if they like being on the wrong side of the law – so much that they don’t want to give it up! Its women power and worth a watch. Available on Netflix.

Money Heist

Money Heist – A famous show by now, this one is a gem. A bunch of oddballs and misfits, mostly ex-felons, are brought together by ‘The Professor’ to plan and execute a robbery. The plan leaves you amazed and the characters make you side with the robbers. An 11-day heist with innumerable twists and turns will keep you hooked. Available on Netflix.

Queen’s Gambit-

Queen’s Gambit-This one is a unique show. A radically different story where a misfit orphan girl, Beth, who is a brilliant chess player. As she grows up, she has to learn to deal with fame, addiction, the money while trying beat the world’s best chess player. Available on Netflix.

GirlBoss

GirlBoss – A girl who can’t or doesn’t want to hold down a job for long, turns her passion for clothes into an online business. Starting from her tiny apartment, it gradually grows into a huge deal. Can she deal with it? This series is a life lesson. Girl power again! Available on Netflix.

The Bold Type

The Bold Type – Three millennial friends working at a fashion magazine deal with everyday issues, trials and tribulations. This show deals with pertinent issues of today, how millennials stand up to them and most of all friendship. Available on Prime Video (all seasons) and Netflix (Seasons 1-4)

Panchayat

Panchayat – Onto hindi shows. This show is about a young graduate who, unable to find a job, decides to accept a job as the secretary to a village panchayat while trying to prepare for his IAS exam. The village is unwilling to accept a city dweller and vice versa. The whole situation has comical repercussions and will have you glued to your phone/tv screens.

Bandish Bandits

Bandish Bandits – Ostensibly a love story, it is in reality a coming of age story. Radhe and Tamanna belong to two vastly opposing genres of music, yet they come together harmoniously to form a band – The Bandish Bandits. The songs are lovely and the story is unique. Available on Prime Video.

Kota Factory

Kota Factory – We all know about India’s competitive exams – we have all had to go through one or the other in our academic phase. This series shows us what goes through students preparing for such exams. Kota is the place where students from all over India go to prepare for entrance exams. Its like a factory churning out exam toppers. But what if you aren’t topper material? Available on TVF Play, Youtube and Netflix.

Tripling

Tripling – Chandan, Chanchal and Chitwan are siblings who have grown apart due to various reasons – circumstances, distance, mindsets. They embark on a road trip with no real end destination and meet with all sorts of situations along the way, which help them re-bond. Available on MX player and TVF Play.

Mirzapur

Mirzapur – This is a different genre – violent drama. A story of gangs, dons, monopoly, politics, one-upmanship, games. A frankenstein-ian story of a monster who grows to be a behemoth to oppose its creator. Available on Prime Video.

Narcos

Narcos – Of a similar genre to the above, this one is the real life story of the famous drug lord Pablo Escober and other Columbian drug cartels like the Cali Cartel. A spin off is Narcos Mexico which is about the Mexican drug lord of the 1980s Felix Gallardo. Both the original and the spin off are very interesting. But be aware of violence. Available on Netflix.
