I consider myself to be blessed in many quarters. I could visit the xeric and exotic land called Kutch twice in two years. Its my job as a geologist that is to be thanked for this opportunity. The best part is I did not roam the barren and salty desert beauty just as a tourist. My POV was that of a geologist that made the views and the experiences so much more deeper and meaningful.
The Kutch region in Gujarat, India is a xeric environment containing very little moisture due to it being a salt desert. It is a unique landscape with kilometers after kilometers, of vast nothingness and stretches of pure white salt and celeste blue skies. Very less vegetation due to the high salinity of the salty lands. The migratory birds make Kutch their homes for the winter months, which makes it a sight to behold.
The White Rann of Kutch is exquisitely beautiful and one of its kind. In some stretches, where the Rann of Kutch lake water remain before it gets dried up, a surprise awaits. Those parts are the home to the white and coralish, orange pink elegant avian guests, the Greater Flamingoes. The flamingo colonies within the turquoise blue waters of the Rann of Kutch lake is a treat for the eyes.
Sarus cranes, cranes, pelicans, flycatcher, buzzards and many other migratory birds from far far lands. They contribute to the exotic character of the Kutch landscape.
