Sugar and Spice and everything nice!

What are girls made of? Sugar and spice and everything nice!

Gender Roles

All of us have heard this poem in some form or the other while growing up. Societal norms have defined a certain way of behaving, of dressing, of talking, especially for women. Any deviation from the norm is seen as an anomaly, an outlier. Society has defined Gender roles to the “T” . If you were lucky enough to have escaped it, implies you have read a lot. Reading helps to open up our mind to new dimensions.

We were lucky. We brought up in a way where gender roles were not defined. Every body could do everything. Reading was encouraged a lot. Such was our love for reading, that often studies would take a back seat in the presence of an un-putdownable book!

Life Lessons

This upbringing without any obvious gender bias, helped me a lot in making my life choices. I never let societal norms dictate my decisions. When I grew up I became a geologist by profession.

Geology a.k.a Earth Sciences require field validation which is physically taxing. But that never held me back. That belief that I can do everything pushed me forward. However apprehensive I would be while climbing up a steep hill to study a particular rock, I knew within my heart that I can do it! I tried not to let the fear win. The sun, the dirt, the heat , the sweat nothing will hold me back.

Yours Truly…

Nature as a Perk!

When I am doing my field work, I feel extremely blessed to be up close and personal with nature. This helps me maintain equilibrium through the taxing days.

Yesterday I saw a dancing peacock while returning from a hard day of climbing up a hill!

Dancing Peacock

At the top of the hill we climbed, a little squirrel was busy munching away at a little snack and a monkey kept staring at us, both blissfully unaware of being on video!

Squirrel and a Monkey

Tiny little pretty wild flowers bobbing their heads within a bed of rocks caught my eye.

Numerous colourful butterflies, flying around from flower to flower, and I luckily captured one in a photo .

Butterfly!

I have been working all around this beautiful lake ringed by hills all around for the past few days. All to find out whether this lake and the hills have been formed a meteorite crashing into earth millions of years ago!

View from the Top!

These are just a few example of the million perks of being a geologist. Though its not a very common profession, but it has its rewards.

  1. The amazing pictures you shared are a visual treat! Your work certainly has it’s perks which are a sweet reward for all the hard work you put in.

  2. Indeed you have an amazing and a taxing profession. I wasn’t anticipating a post that would have gender roles as its mainstay…I am glad I read this post. So true that it is only through education that we can break the social barriers.

  3. You are right. People think certain professions are only for me, but women are equally capable. Lovely pictures.

  4. You rock this profession and it shows that girls can do anything and nothing can stop them. It was a wonderful read!

  5. Good to go through this post. I had my specialisation in geo physics in my M.Sc. You are lucky to have this opportunity, when I did, there were nil opportunities.. in early eighties. I found my solace in being a physics lecturer and then a maths teacher for high school and has no regrets as such. But yes, being a geophysicist was something I wanted to. 🙂

  6. Geology has many perks. I was curious to know what did your research say about the lake was it formed by meteorites, I get fascinated by these things. The pictures are wonderful.

  7. Oh this was such a wonderful read. I can understand how physically challenge your job must be, but its perk of being close to nature is unbeatable! Do let us know if it was formed by the meterorite or not!

  8. Wasn’t aware that you are a geologist! Loved the way you took away all the clutter and focused on the minute beauties of nature….loved the photographs of the butterfly and the flower. Wish I could go on a trip with you someday, I will learn to observe and appreciate nature in a better manner.

  9. I envy you Ginia. I know its a tough job but am sure it is gratifying. My college didnt have many options when I wanted Geography and in our time we were not sent away to study. Your photos are beautiful..nature at its best. My 7 year old grandson says he wants to be an explorer. I dont even know what that entails.
