Quaint picnics

Shillong and Picnics

Ever since we moved to Shillong, Meghalaya, there has been a major change in our lifestyle. We take picnicking very seriously now as a family!

A quaint picnic is one of our most beloved weekend fun activity in locations very near or a short drive away from Shillong. Our friends Arvind and Anicia,  took us for our first Meghalayan Picnic at Laitlum Canyons back in 2023 and we were extremely happy. I personally was very impressed by the attention to minor details and the planning that they executed in packing the picnic basket. And since then the picnic saga has started and not stopped.

We bought a picnic basket, a mat, folding chairs and a table one by one for the purpose. The best thing about Meghalaya and the outskirts of Shillong is that the outdoors is super clean and aesthetic. The air is crispy and fresh with minimal pollution. Rolling green hills, a quaint grove of trees with a green carpet, and a freshwater stream gurgling close by. These are all waiting for you to reach with your picnic basket filled with goodies!

Picnic Goodies

For our picnics, we usually pack sandwiches, cakes, cupcakes, whole fruits, alu/ stuffed parathas, pulao, dry chicken curry, salad, sweets and cold drink. Another staple is hot ginger tea in a flask which is must for the journey to the picnic spot.
Some of the places near Shillong where we have picnicked other than Laitlum include Mawphanlur with the beautiful lakes, Nartiang with magnificent monoliths, Nongstoin rolling hills which makes me realise why Shillong is called the Scotland of the East, Sacred Forest a.k.a Mawphlang etc.

One of our memorable picnics was a rainy and wet picnic with Rupsa, Atanu and Auro when they came to Shillong in September,2024. You can read about it here.

We really look forward to our quaint picnics. In fact recently we celebrated our 8th Anniversary with a couple picnic near Mawphlang.
