Krang Shuri Falls Day Trip

By virtue of our job as geologists, we now stay in the Scotland of the East a.k.a Shillong. Meghalaya other than hosting the rainiest place in the world can also be easily given the crown of the waterfall capital of India! So never the one to miss out, recently we went on a day trip to a picture perfect waterfall in the Jaintia Hills, the Krang Shuri Falls.

Krang Shuri Falls

Relatively less popular in the tourist circuit compared to the Cherrapunji waterfalls, the Krang Shuri falls is a sight to behold close to your heart. We left Shillong at around 9 in the morning and reached our destination by noon as it’s nearly a 3 hour picturesque drive from Shillong, and we enjoyed all the way on the roadtrip, snacking and singing along.
After a quick cup of tea at a local tea stall we started the mini Trek to see the waterfall. We just walked for around 100 to 150 steps to reach this scenic waterfall. Thankfully I was wearing sensible footwear.
After around 50 steps, we got the preview of the waterfall from afar. It was like a motivation to keep going, however slippery and inclined the steps were. At this view point, there was option for ziplining directly to the falls instead of taking the steps. A few young boys were enjoying the ziplining which we enjoyed from afar.
Then there was a walk for around 15 to 20 minutes after which the sheer beauty that is Krang Shuri greets you.

The Beauty!

I was amazed at the sheer beauty of the scene. A curtain of crystal clear water gushing down into a turquoise blue- green pool. The best part is you can jump into the pool and have a swim if you wish to. And if you don’t wish to get wet, there is an option. You can try boating in the upstream serene and calm river which ultimately forms this waterfall.
Till now this one is my favourite waterfall in Meghalaya for sure!

An excerpt on Krang Shuri Falls in West Jaintia Hills…..
“Compared to the cliff-hugging plunge falls that you will find in Southern Meghalaya, the Krangshuri waterfall features a different aesthetic. A placid river suddenly drops, creating a curtain of flowing water that falls over a cave. From afar, Krangsuri is a sight that will make you think of the Jungle Book. During the summer, blue, clear waters can be seen at the bottom of the waterfalls which itself is located in the middle of a thickly forested area”(Source: Meghalaya Tourism”)
